Bluetooth Tap is a retail proximity device built on Equal Experts' beacon technology, which combines conventional Bluetooth ranging with a low-power magnetic field to enable precise tap interactions within 25cm. Hyphenate developed both a working prototype for technology demonstration and the concept and design-for-manufacture of the production model. The design set out to make the nature of the technology legible in the object itself. Most distinctively, the parametric ripple across the top tapping surface gives form to what the device does—communicating wirelessly across varying distances—so that an abstract capability reads as a physical, intuitive gesture point.
